Experience ER Before You Graduate. Want a glimpse into what it’s like to work in emergency vet med? Our student opportunities are designed to get you out of the classroom and into the ER. Whether you're scrubbing in as a DVM extern, supporting real cases as a veterinary nursing/technician student, or representing VEG on your campus as an ambassador, you’ll get firsthand ER experience, real mentorship, and a feel for what makes VEG not normal—in the best way.

As a DVM extern, you’ll work one-on-one with VEG emergency doctors to build treatment plans, diagnose emergent conditions, and thrive in our open concept ERs. It’s your chance to roll up your sleeves and get real-world experience while soaking up VEG culture.


Program Structure


Phase 1: Written Application
Evaluates knowledge and goals.

Phase 2: Application Review
The application is reviewed to ensure candidates meet all program requirements

Phase 3: Virtual Interview
Submit answers to a few short questions and connect with our Talent Team.

Phase 4: Scheduling
Accepted externs choose preferred dates and locations from live availability.


Eligibility: Rising and current 3rd and 4th year DVM students at AVMA accredited schools.

Length: If not for school credit: up to two weeks; For school credit: two weeks, flexible based on school requirements.

Location: Select VEG hospitals nationwide

Modality: In person


How to Apply


Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The program runs from January–June and July–December. Apply early to reserve your spot.

DVM Externship

In this program, veterinary nursing/technician  students gain real ER experience, from triage to diagnostics to collaborating with credentialed veterinary technicians—who we refer to as veterinary nurses at VEG—in an open-concept hospital setting.


Program Structure


Phase 1: Application + Interview
The application is reviewed to ensure candidates meet all program requirements. If accepted, you will meet with a team member to discuss the externship.

Phase 2: Scheduling + Externing
Students are paired with VEG nurses and fully immersed in the ER.

Phase 3: Feedback
Feedback from both students and VEGgies helps shape the future of the program.


Eligibility: Students in AVMA CVTEA-accredited vet tech or nursing programs
Length: Flexible based on school requirements
Location: Select VEG hospitals nationwide

Modality: In person

Apply for a Nursing Externship

Veterinary Nurse/Technician Externship

VEG campus ambassadors are DVM students who lead the charge in spreading the VEG way on campus. From event planning and peer education to swag-wearing and trend-spotting, ambassadors are our voice at AVMA-accredited schools—and future leaders in the field.
