WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A STRAY ANIMAL IN THE PHOENIX AREA

If you’re a Good Samaritan who found a stray, the best place to bring them is to your local GP veterinarian, a shelter, or rehabilitation center. If these options are not available, we can scan for a microchip to help you locate an owner. Our mission is helping people and their pets when they need us most, and that includes strays! If the stray you found needs emergency care, we’re here to help.

OUR PHOENIX ANIMAL HOSPITAL IS ALSO A BLOOD BANK FOR DOGS!

VEG in Phoenix is a VEG Blood Bank location, which provides blood for canines. These donations help save the lives of dogs in need of transfusions. The blood we store can be available to a VEG hospital or shared with a local veterinarian. It’s one more way VEG can give back to the community. You can help by signing up your dog to be a blood donor. To find out more, ask one of our VEGgies about the VEG Blood Bank.

My partner and I have had to bring one of our cats here twice within a week, both times for urinary symptoms. Everyone was so kind and helpful, good at explaining what was happening, and made sure we knew what it would be like when our boy came out of anesthesia, since that can be disconcerting. When we first came in, he was very anxious and started panting, and they had an oxygen chamber they could put him in to help him calm down. It was much busier the second time, but they did their best to keep things moving forward for all their patients, it was impressive to watch from the private room they were able to give us for a few hours. A lot of the vet techs were the same both times we came in, and they recognized us and were so sweet with our cat. Every one of them clearly loves each individual animal they care for. They even had rain sounds and crickets playing in the cat room my boy spent a day hospitalized in, to help keep things calmer. I’ve just been really impressed by how kind everyone we’ve talked to there has been. I’ve called with late night questions a couple times, well before ever bringing a pet in, and they have been so patient with me, without fail. I also appreciate not having any anxiety showing up here as a queer couple. Because VEG makes a point of advertising inclusivity and respect for all kinds of people, I can focus fully on my cat’s health and not on my vet’s potential opinions about me and my partner. I wish we didn’t need to have an emergency vet we know and trust, but I know we have that here. I know if I bring either of my cats here they’ll be getting good care, no matter which of the vets is in.

My experience with all doctors and nurses was 10/10. The way they care and love for their patients shows and I appreciate all they did for me but especially for saving my sweet girl. All staff is attentive and hands on. I hope to never be back in the ER but know that if you do go you’ll babies will be in the best hands. Thank you so much to all that took care of my family and I!

Doctor Tansey and their entire team were amazing. My new primary care doctor told me to go to the emergency room immediately when I took my Great Dane, Fitz, in for a sore on his bum. I was told, by his pcp, out of nowhere, that he had bloat; we need to take X-rays! Ok! Do that! They did. The doctor says a large amount of gas is present and there is an obstruction. Diagnosis: he is dying of bloat. You have to take him to the ER immediately. The assessment didn’t make sense since he has his stomach tacked and the treatment we were seeking had nothing to do with bloat. How did we get here? Outside of being gassy (which he always is) and lethargic (because his bum hurt), Fitz had none of the indicators of bloat—no coughing, retching, distention, pacing, etc. However, I am not a doctor…I am Fitz’s mom, so if the doctor says he needs to go to the ER-that’s what we do. I chose VEG because the team there helped us when my other Great Dane, Cordelia, had pneumonia. The moment Fitz and I walked into VEG, we were immediately taken back for treatment. The care team took vitals, did sonograms, and did a physical exam. Bloat was ruled out right away, and more images were required to determine he had a 4cm blockage, which was probably caused by him swallowing too much air… dogs do tend to pant a lot when they are in stressful conditions…and it would resolve itself entirely. The entire team was so kind to both of us. They made sure we were comfortable, knew what was going on every step of the way, and what our action plan was, and updated it as it developed. I always felt like we were top of mind and a priority. I’m terrible with names, and I was a bit of an emotional wreck. Every single person we encountered was kind. The lab techs, especially, were very good at placing Fitz's IV. Our doctor was incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and had an incredibly calming presence that helped both Fitz and me get through the day.
