Dr. Lesley Cohen

Dr. Lesley Cohen

Medical Director

Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine

Originally from Florida, Dr. Cohen found a sense of home on the west coast after graduating from Oregon State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She worked as a small animal emergency veterinarian in the Willamette Valley for three years before joining VEG in 2024. She fell in love with Tucson as a true diamond in the rough of the Sonoran Desert, and appreciates the landscape, culture, and community it has to offer. She believes deeply in the importance of empathy during medical emergencies and enjoys coaching fellow doctors through challenging cases and surgery. Her favorite VEG core value is creating meaningful moments for pets, customers, and her team through medical excellence, compassion, and unexpected acts of hospitality. Outside the hospital, Dr. Cohen and her husband, share their home with three cats, and an ever-growing collection of houseplants.

WHERE CAN I TAKE MY PET BIRD OR EXOTIC PET IN AN EMERGENCY?

VEG is skilled to handle emergency care for avians, reptiles, and all types of exotic pets.

DO I HAVE TO CALL BEFORE COMING IN?

Though you can just walk into any of our 24 hour hospitals, we recommend calling first so we’re familiar with the situation when you come in.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT VEG?

When you take your pet to VEG, you’ll be seen by a veterinarian right away, even before filling out paperwork. We’ll even meet you at your car if you need help bringing in your pet. No waiting in the lobby; you stay with your pet the entire time, even if surgery is involved. And yes, we’re pet lovers, but we’re people-friendly too! We’ll openly discuss diagnosis and treatment options. And we always make sure the pet patient and pet parent are as comfortable as possible.

We traveled from New Jersey to Arizona on July 16th on a road trip bc our dog needed to see the world. She was diagnosed in June with an aggressive brain tumor and we knew she wouldn’t make it to the new year . Unfortunately Saturday morning she had a seizure so we called our vet in New Jersey to recommend somewhere to take her here because we needed someone that had neurological team or able to treat her since this was serious . We found VEG and I couldn’t have asked for a better send off for our Bailey girl! The whole office was absolutely amazing . The second we walked in they grabbed her and immediately started an IV line . Dr Cohen , there are no words for this woman and the compassion she showed ! She treated Bailey as if she always knew her!! The nurses who took care of her were just unbelievable! Oakley , was just so caring , compassionate, patient, loving - no words and lastly Dr Conway , she has 2 frenchies and knew the pain we were feeling! She was so kind and loving ! She did everything she could and gave us the time we needed until we had to say goodbye! Thank you all for truly being amazing and we never would think a vet office would be this amazing . With so much love and gratitude- The Dugan Family

This isn’t our first visit to VEG, and I’m sure it won’t be our last—pet emergencies have a way of striking when you least expect them. It’s an enormous comfort knowing their team of wonderful, strong (mostly) women 💪 are there whenever we need them. I’m especially grateful they allowed me to stay by my pet’s side throughout treatment and included me in her care. No one knows a pet better than their owner, and that partnership made all the difference in her comfort and recovery. The staff answered every question with patience and kindness throughout our stay. Carla, our nurse, was gentle and attentive with our girl in a way that meant more than words can express. Dr. Croel was thorough, direct, and honest with us every step of the way. The facility itself is spotless, and the staff clearly prioritize patient care in everything they do. As much as we hope to never need an emergency vet, we’re deeply grateful VEG is there when we do. Maya and her family thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The most welcoming and compassionate pet hospital we’ve ever visited. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted and our little girl, Vivi, was immediately triaged. Two vet technicians and a veterinarian examined her right away, carefully gathered her history, and made sure she received pain medication as quickly as possible. Hannah, the technician manager, was absolutely wonderful. During the chaos of the traumatic incident, Vivi had a potty accident, and tech Hannah gently cleaned her up with such kindness and dignity. The compassion we witnessed throughout our whole visit felt so genuine and heartfelt. We were also given a soft towel to wrap Vivi in while we waited, a small gesture that meant so much during such a stressful time. Kim at the front desk, along with another lovely receptionist, offered us drinks and snacks and chatted with us as though we were neighbors and friends. The entire atmosphere was very warm, and welcoming. One thing we especially loved was the transparency of the hospital. We could see the team working, and it was obvious that everyone was incredibly busy, and completely focused on providing exceptional care. When it was time for Vivi’s procedure, we were able to stand beside her and watch the veterinarians work, which brought us tremendous peace of mind for a helicopter mom such as myself. Throughout our visit we met several members of the team as shifts changed, including Dr. Cohen, Dr. Lauren, and technician Christopher. I only wish I could remember everyone’s names because every single person treated both Vivi and us with extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and respect. I cannot recommend this hospital highly enough!
