Medical Director

Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine

Originally from Florida, Dr. Cohen found a sense of home on the west coast after graduating from Oregon State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She worked as a small animal emergency veterinarian in the Willamette Valley for three years before joining VEG in 2024. She fell in love with Tucson as a true diamond in the rough of the Sonoran Desert, and appreciates the landscape, culture, and community it has to offer. She believes deeply in the importance of empathy during medical emergencies and enjoys coaching fellow doctors through challenging cases and surgery. Her favorite VEG core value is creating meaningful moments for pets, customers, and her team through medical excellence, compassion, and unexpected acts of hospitality. Outside the hospital, Dr. Cohen and her husband, share their home with three cats, and an ever-growing collection of houseplants.

VEG has some of the most caring and courteous nurses and staff on hand at every moment in that facility. From the moment we walked in, they were attentive and listened to everything that we had said. Unfortunately, we found a dog off of the on-ramp going south of Tucson. We picked up the golden retriever and brought her in right away. They did everything that they could to help the golden retriever even though she wasn't ours. They comforted her and loved on her like as if she was ours. They gave her pain meds and asked us if we needed anything. The nurses were so kind and they sat with us and kept checking in on us.

After much consideration and many tears, we realized it was time to help our lovely 14 1/2 year old Golden Retriever rest and end her pain. We live on the east side of Tucson and knew we would drive across town to get help from the VEG team. Previously, they helped us when our girl had vertigo, and we were impressed with their tender loving care approach to helping her. When we arrived, she was resting comfortably in the back of our truck, so we wanted to see if the team could come out to help her. When we asked if they would be willing to do this outside in the back of the truck, they did not hesitate to do the right thing for her. The team members came out and did their part in the process, explaining everything to us along the way. They also gave us the time we needed to say goodbye. The team was compassionate and understanding while providing her the tender loving care she needed. We are forever grateful to the team for their compassion in our time of need. We highly recommend the team at VEG for your pet's care. They are professional, caring, and understanding.

Life Savers!!! Last Saturday our beloved family Basenji/Shepherd mix 'Kino' was struck (bit) multiple times on his snout by a rattlesnake. Our Vet was closed and their answering machine referred her to VEG. My wife called VEG and rushed him to the Oro Valley location. The staff was AMAZING! Skilled, knowledgable and so caring for Kino as well as informative for us. Kino ended up staying overnight after the anti-venom treatment and pain meds. The communication and updates throughout his stay were comforting and informative. We got the call at a little after 5:00am Sunday that we could come get him. While that experience was emotional, it was an illustration of the care, teamwork and dedication of their entire team. Our Tuesday followup/checkup was an equally perfect experience. A traumatic experience for Kino and us, VEG delivered on their 'mission' that is written boldly on the wall. I hope that you and your beloved NEVER need their services, but if you do...Veterinary Emergency Group is your only call... Cari, I and especially Kino thank every one of you so very much!
