EMERGENCY VETS AND URGENT CARE IN Cary, NC

welcome to VEG Cary!

Dr. Heather Rhoden

Medical Director

Oklahoma State University; NC State University (MBA); Texas A&M (internship)

Dr. Rhoden, a Nebraska native, has been passionate about veterinary medicine since the age of 3. Her journey has taken her from the quiet fields of rural Nebraska to a multifaceted career in veterinary medicine. She earned her DVM in 2014, completed an internship in 2015 and most recently added an MBA in 2025.

Her career path has been diverse and fulfilling: from being a General Practitioner for 8 months, to an Emergency Doctor and Interim Department Manager at a busy multispecialty hospital to serving as a clinical instructor in Emergency and Critical Care at NC State's Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Heather has also worked as a Relief Veterinarian (think substitute teacher for vets) across several states, a business consultant, career mentor, and national Continuing Education (CE) provider. She’s had the privilege of wearing many hats, each contributing to her deep commitment to improving veterinary practices and mentoring others.

Heather joined VEG as a curious Per Diem doctor, unsure if the VEG way would be the right fit for her. But it didn’t take long for her to realize that VEG isn’t "normal," and the unique approach made providing care when pets and people need it most, not only easier but far more fulfilling.

Now, as the Medical Director, Heather is excited to focus on what she’s truly passionate about—delivering high-quality care for emergency and critically ill patients, and fostering leadership development. She loves teaching emergency medicine and helping the hospital run more smoothly and efficiently. What she values most about working at VEG is the opportunity to make a real impact—both in her field and on the lives of her colleagues.

10/10 recommend this ER for your pet! We brought our girl Nala and there wasn’t a moment we felt she wasn’t in good hands. Also, we were able to be with her every step of the way! Even when she was hospitalized, we got to stay the night with her which made us all feel so much more comfortable. Also, even though they did get pretty busy at times, they always made time if you needed anything and saw our girl immediately upon arriving! Dr. Nilles is amazing and so is the entire VEG staff. We are thankful for them being thorough, knowledgeable, and loving the whole time. We had to bring her back the same night we took her home and she ended up being transferred to NC State’s ICU but we are so overwhelmingly grateful to VEG and especially Dr. Johnson who went above and beyond to get her transferred the very same night to NC State! Thank you VEG❤️

I could not be more grateful for the staff here! I had an emergency with my beloved pig, Timon. After calling about 10 other places at 7pm on a Monday night, all of which would not take Timon because they don’t treat pigs or they don’t do emergencies for non patients…. I called VEG and they did not even hesitate when I asked to bring him in. I told them I was about 2 hours away and they told me they would have a room ready for me when I arrived! From the moment we arrived they were amazing! Even though the night did not end with me taking my Timon home… I could not be more grateful for these people! They made sure he was comfortable and not in pain. They had snacks for me to give him so he was happy in his last moments before it was time for goodbye…. They walked me through the whole process and were very thoughtful and caring through the whole thing. Again I could not be more grateful for the staff!

Dr. Johnson, Kiersten, Shannon, Mario, Dr. Niles, and their team (I need help with all of the names), were absolutely amazing. Not only did they save our girl, they were thorough, sought consultation, made educated decisions, and most of all embraced us all like family. We owe them our gratitude and support for the rest of our days! All of them! Dr. J and Kiersten took charge right away and their team followed their lead! Even through shift changes, we were always attended to and cared for, especially Koda and myself! Her pups were fed and happy, and I trusted them all. 🐶🐾❤️
