Common questions about the services at VEG ER for Pets

IS VEG OPEN 24 HOURS?

Yes, all VEG locations are open all the time – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – even on holidays and weekends to care for pet emergencies.

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT?

At VEG, we don’t take appointments, because we deal with emergencies. When the unexpected happens, call us or walk in to your nearest VEG location 24/7 for immediate care.

HOW DO I KNOW IF IT’S AN EMERGENCY?

Never self-diagnose your pet. Sometimes you just can’t tell if your pet is having a true emergency. But VEG can. Call your local VEG anytime and a veterinarian will answer your medical questions and determine if you should come in.

CAN I GO TO VEG FOR URGENT CARE?

Yes, VEG offers Pet Urgent Care for injuries and illnesses such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, limping, wounds, ear infections, eye problems, and constipation! Visit your local VEG and we’ll triage urgent care for your pet immediately. Learn more about the medical services we offer.

WHERE CAN I TAKE MY PET BIRD OR EXOTIC PET IN AN EMERGENCY?

VEG is skilled to handle emergency care for avians, reptiles, and all types of exotic pets.

DO I HAVE TO CALL BEFORE COMING IN?

Though you can just walk into any of our 24 hour hospitals, we recommend calling first so we’re familiar with the situation when you come in.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT VEG?

When you take your pet to VEG, you’ll be seen by a veterinarian right away, even before filling out paperwork. We’ll even meet you at your car if you need help bringing in your pet. No waiting in the lobby; you stay with your pet the entire time, even if surgery is involved. And yes, we’re pet lovers, but we’re people-friendly too! We’ll openly discuss diagnosis and treatment options. And we always make sure the pet patient and pet parent are as comfortable as possible.

Five stars is not enough. Hands down the best ER in town and all around. To set the scene: it’s 2am right now. My dog has been vomiting since this morning, couldn’t keep down any food or water, dehydrated and exhausted (me too) and we had just spent 4 hours in PETS Referral Berkeley, sitting on a bench, being told our spot was given to other pets over and over again because we were “not an emergency”. “To hell with this”, I left Berkeley PETS frustrated. (Looking back I should’ve left sooner because that place was horrifying - both dogs and humans were screaming behind the walls) But my buddy was still heaving. So I called every other ER I could find on map. And our luck began to turn when VEG Larkspur picked up. You might find this hard to believe but I’m now writing this review lying down on a sofa bed in VEG’s treatment room that they converted for me, with drinks and snacks. My dog is getting treatment from Dr. Valerie Savino and team in an open floor clinic where I could see everything. And if I’m being honest, they are treating Zeus (my dog) better than I am - sweet talking, belly rubbing, the whole spa package. And most importantly, the team kept me informed throughout the process, from the what to the how and why, no detail was spared. This, compared to Berkeley PETS, the difference is night and day. My only wish - they would open a non-ER service, so we could do routine visits here, too. If only every ER, both for pets and for people, is like this.

The VEG was a very welcoming environment that truly cared about my Lola. They took the time to come to her instead of me having to leave her with someone in a room. I would definitely recommend the specialty group to anyone in Marin who needs care for their pet after their vet is closed. Their goal is to care for your pet before anything else. I’ve never seen anything like this! Truly the BEST emergency vet I have been to. Thanks to all of you for your love and care for Lola. It’s greatly appreciated!

My dog ate large amounts of a rug and needed linear foreign body surgery. The staff is amazing, so attentive and kind. Always checking on both my dog and me, offering me snacks and coffee, and setting up a cute bed for me to sleep while my dog was in the OR since I had been up with her all night. My dog is also very anxious so I love that I was able to be present throughout the whole process.
