24 Hour Emergency Vet Hospital and Urgent Pet Care in Elk Grove, California

Dr. Katey Wahlen

Dr. Katey Wahlen

Medical Director

Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine; University of Minnesota

Dr. Katey Wahlen came to the Sacramento area on a whim several years ago and fell in love with the culture, food and natural beauty. She is originally from New Mexico but her veterinary career has taken her on many adventures. Prior to veterinary school, she worked for the Belize Wildlife and Referral Center; she helped rehabilitate injured parrots, monkeys, large jungle cats as well as manatees injured or orphaned by boats. Her time in Central America with Dr. Isabelle, founder of the wildlife center, changed the trajectory of her life.

Dr. Wahlen is a 2017 graduate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. She completed her clinical training at the University of Minnesota. She then completed a rotating internship at the famous VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver, CO where Animal Planet filmed “Emergency Vets” and “E-Vet Interns”. For the last several years, Dr. Wahlen has been doing overnight emergency work in the Sacramento area. Dr. Wahlen’s primary focus continues to be in emergency medicine with a strong emphasis on emergency surgery.

In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano (poorly), sewing quilts, rock climbing and hiking. She lives locally with her husband, daughter and crazy Australian Shepherd Ember.

DO I HAVE TO CALL BEFORE COMING IN?

Came here during a trip from out of town. Staff are incredibly friendly and kind. We showed up around 930 on a Friday night (during what they said was a crazy night) and we were seen by a provider in less than an hour. They laid out a little mat for our dog and the chairs and couches to wait were comfortable. They even had a little drink fridge with drinks for the pet parents! I absolutely LOVE the open concept. Being able to be with our pup while she was in pain (leg injury) made it so much better for us and for her (since she’s a Velcro dog). Bill came out to about $500 for exam, injection drugs, and oral drugs. They sent the bill to us on our phone via text and made it easy to review in private. The vet was super reasonable talking us through the pros and cons of X-rays and how they might change management. All the staff was so friendly and kind, making conversation with us and loving on our sweet pup. 11/10 I would definitely recommend this place! I wish every vet was like VEG ER for pets.

I had to take Sia, my cat to VEG today because VCA Animal Hospital on Bradshaw does not have a doctor. I thought my cat was in respiratory distress because she got a cold and was breathing like she was distressed last night. I did not sleep at all and I was very stressed out and concerned for her. Upon arrival they called a doctor right over who assessed her and told me she was not in respiratory distress and put us in a private room where more vital signs were taken. We saw a doctor in less than 10 minutes and we were assured the cold needed to run it's course and she would not recommend antiviral medication. The doctor said we could take her home. I thought we would get a huge bill but she said there was no cost because they didn't do anything. But, they did a great service for me and my husband because we had piece of mind that our furbaby was not going to die. The fact that they took her immediately to see a doctor for triage to determine if she needed oxygen was very impressive. I was in tears. All staff who checked out my cat, Sia, did a wonderful job. I truly appreciate this service being here in Elk Grove and I highly recommend this emerging service for all furbabies.

Went to VEG ER in Elk Grove, CA on Sunday 6/21/26. Let me start with they were absolutely wonderful! I have heard great things from friends in the vet field and I follow the VEG instagram as well. They definitely did not disappoint. My soul dog, Lilly, has kidney disease and heart disease and was fitting the symptoms for possible kidney failure. Nolan did our intake and was very kind and down to earth. Dr. Huntyr Mcmurty was Lilly’s doctor and she was compassionate, kind, caring, and listened very well. Dr. Mcmurty laid out what our options are and we agreed to proceed with blood work to check kidney values and go from there.after blood work supporting what I expected, extremely increased kidney values, Dr. Mcmurty explained our next options for hospital care or supportive care until humane euthanasia, of which we decided to do the latter since Lilly is 15.5yrs old. Overall the experience, as hard as it is to be with your sick fur baby, was very pleasant because of the wonderful care team and staff. I regret that I didn’t catch everyone’s name that helped Lilly, but each person was exceptional. All this to say it was very busy, a bit short staffed, and yet they still managed to remain calm, triage very well, and provide excellent care. If anyone needs an emergency vet I will always recommend VEG. Oh and those curious of pricing: with a sick and elderly dog I already expect to pay at least $500, and with ER vets I thought it would be significantly more, but was under $600 for an exam, blood work, medication, and subcutaneous fluids. So in my opinion very reasonable and well priced. Thank you VEG for all you do. Vets, vet techs, nurses, assistants, you are all amazing and no amount of praise can describe my gratitude towards you all. Thank you ❤️
